Dating back to the early 1900s, our family tree is deeply rooted in a tradition of craftsmanship, featuring skilled woodworkers beginning in Navy shipyards and machinists in motorcycle workshops of Indian and Harley Davidson. The essence of our wood crafting passion can be traced back to Bill’s great-grandfather, Charles Seymour Lloyd Evans, whose legacy in woodworking has profoundly influenced our family.

The Early 1900s

Charles was born in 1890 in the historic town of Pembroke Dock, Wales. At the young age of 15, he began an apprenticeship as a shipwright at the local Navy Yard. He studied ship building for 6 years, mastering his woodworking skills and laying the foundation for his future endeavors. The closure of the Navy Yard in 1925 marked a turning point in his life. Seeking new opportunities, Charles, alongside his wife and twin children, embarked on a journey to America.

Coming to America

After a week long journey, Charles and his family arrived to America, as one of the first group of immigrants to not pass through Ellis Island. From New York, they took a train to New Hampshire where he and his family met their sponsors who helped them settle in. As a skilled craftsman, Charles found his calling in carpentry. His journey eventually led him to Medford, Massachusetts, where he secured a position as a Master Carpenter at the Charlestown Navy Yard. His expertise was crucial during the 1950s when he contributed to the maintenance and repairs of the USS Constitution, affectionately known as "Old Ironsides." The ship, a symbol of American naval history, benefited greatly from Charles' meticulous care and attention to detail.

Family Heirlooms

Retirement did not dim Charles’ passion for woodworking. He established a workshop at his home where he delighted in crafting fine wooden gifts. His creations were not just items of utility but tokens of love and heritage, cherished by those who received them. Among these gifts are beautifully crafted cribbage boards, which became a beloved item for many generations of our family, serving as a tangible connection to our family’s rich heritage in woodworking.

Carrying On a Legacy

We are excited to be carrying on our great-grandfather’s legacy, and we hope to inspire future generations to continue the family woodworking tradition that blends skill, history, and love.
