General Questions
No, we are happy to say that we do everything in-house ourselves, including all wood crafting, and engraving.
The patterns will be exactly the same as seen on our website, and we will use the same woods listed on our website, but each tree and each board is unique. There may be differences in wood coloring, grain, and/or texture from the boards displayed on our website. This is the true beauty of wood crafting and your unique and memorable piece.

Sapwood is the outer layer of the tree (excluding the bark), and is a yellowish to reddish color. Heartwood is the interior of the tree and is light red-brown color. All wood starts out as sapwood, but as a tree grows the sapwood is converted to heartwood. The color variations of cherry can be seen on the front vs. the back sides of our charcuterie boards, making each and every board beautiful unique. We also use these color variations to create our striped design option on our solid cherry boards.
We offer three different size boards that are best used for different purposes.
The cheese board is our smallest board (12"x8"x0.75”) and perfect for cutting your favorite cheeses and small fruits and veggies. It is face grain and made from your choice of solid maple, solid cherry, cherry striped, or a combination of all three woods (our Severn board).
The charcuterie board is much larger than the cheese board, and as long as the cutting board but not as wide (18"x10"x0.75"). The biggest difference is that it is half the thickness of the cutting board and is designed for serving foods and light to medium cutting (not extensive chopping nor carving meats). It is face grain and designed with a beautiful striped pattern of solid maple, cherry and walnut hardwoods. It makes for a great addition to any kitchen as both a charcuterie and a cutting board and is often displayed as usable art when not in use.
The cutting board is our largest board and is meant for heavy chopping, cutting and meat carving (18"x12"x1.5"). It is our largest board and is twice the thickness of the charcuterie board. You can add a juice groove when ordering, making it the perfect board for carving meats. The chamfer edge on this board is cut equal on each side, making this cutting board easy to reverse and cut on either side. The back side has no juice groove giving an even larger cutting surface. We craft our edge grain cutting board by laying long strips of premium hardwood maple, cherry and walnut side by side and gluing them together. The wood fibers run horizontally, making the board more knife-friendly than face grain boards.
A juice groove collects the flavorful juices that escape from roasted meat. This clever feature prevents messy spills on your counter top or table. The collected juices can then be used to create a delicious gravy, or simply discarded with ease.
The best way to understand the difference is to consider the “grain” in any piece of wood. The face grain is what you’d normally see on the “outside” of the board, where you see most of the grain and beauty of a piece of wood. Edge grain is the “side” of the board, and it’s usually the side that woodworkers measure the “thickness” of a board.
That’s a tricky question. Due to the nature of the grain, the edge of the board is the strongest part of the board and many feel that an edge grain board tends to show knife scratches and marks less. However, because the grain is usually prettier on the face of the board, a face grain board often provides more visual interest in the kitchen, while still providing an excellent surface for cutting.
We feel very strongly about using all natural ingredients that are food safe and of highest quality for treating and preparing our boards. Our board butter is made from tung oil, orange peel oil and local beeswax. Petroleum-based mineral oil used by many other board companies may be cheap, but it’s certainly not healthy.
Yes, we have it in our Shop (click here). We love using our board butter on all of our wooden spoons too!
What sets us apart is the quality of our work, our level of customization, and our top-notch customer service. We work closely with our clients to create one-of-a-kind pieces that perfectly reflect your brand or personal style. Whether it's engraving a company logo on a cutting board or adding a special message to a desk accessory, we go the extra mile to make each gift truly special and memorable.
For starters, our boards are made from hardwoods, such as cherry, maple and walnut. Many of the cheaper boards are made from bamboo, which is a grass, or oak, which is an open grain wood, which can lead to bacteria problems. Our boards are also crafted and engraved in-house and not mass produced. All of our materials are food safe and of highest quality, unlike boards that are treated with mineral oil, which is petroleum based, and not safe. If you’re looking for a memorable gift that is of highest quality and will last for years to come, we are here to serve you.

Real Estate Closing & Company Gifts
We make the boards here in our wood shop, and with the nature of woodworking - milling, cutting, assembling, and finishing, the process takes about 3 weeks for your boards to be ready. Once they're made, we hold them as inventory for you, and they are ready as soon as you notify us, with just a two business day turn around time for engraving and mailing your gift.
Once we receive your Send Gift Now Form, we’ll engrave your board and mail it in just two business days.
We typically only hold inventory for boards that have been pre-purchased, but contact us if you need something sooner and we’ll do our best to accommodate your needs.
You can either order the same engraving for your team, for example The Clark Team with your logo, and have an inventory for your team, or you can order increments of 5 or 10 for each team member and we can customize pricing for you depending on how many engraving set ups are needed and how many boards you are ordering. We offer discounts for 5, 10, 25, 50, or more boards.
Sure, no problem. We can mail the gift wrapped board directly to you, and you can surprise your client with your amazing gift.
No worries, we wait to engrave your name and logo at the time we engrave for your client, so if you change companies we will happily change your branding prior to sending out your next gift. Once we engrave it, it is non-returnable.
If you are looking for something a bit simpler, without your client's name engraved, and without the gift wrapping and shipping service, we have special pricing with a minimum purchase of 10 boards. This offer has no client engraving, no gift wrapping, and no shipping, but will still have your business engraved on one side. In general, feedback has been very favorable with the full gift service, but we recognize that this may not be for everyone, and we are certainly willing to tailor what you may be looking for and price accordingly. Contact us for pricing and more information.
Can I order engraving on one-side only, with my company name and logo, and not engrave on the front?
Yes, of course. We are happy to customize your boards in whatever way best works for you.
